Horror of Lovecraft – or like Ktulhu got into games
In this article I do not want to retell the biography and life of the writer. You can do this yourself by opening the necessary articles and blogs. In this article, I want to make out how Lovecraft became famous, how he could affect the culture of the world as a whole and how it affected the game industry.
Followers of the myths Ktulhu
Lovecraft became famous after his death, mainly thanks to the followers who promoted his work, and also complemented the “myths of Ktulhu”. August Willyam Derlet, who was Lovecraft’s passionate fans played a large role in this. He actively promoted Lovecraft’s work before and after the death of the writer, and subsequently Derlet was declared a creative lavecraft arousal. Based on the drafts of the writer, he wrote the novel “Hidden at the Threshold”, as well as several stories in the spirit of “Myths Ktulhu”, which were included in the collections “The only heir” and “Room with boarded up shutters”.
But Lovecraft’s work affected many other creators: such as John Carpenter; Guillermo del Toro; Stephen King; Sam Raymy and T.D. But now Lovecraft Horrors are most popular in the genre of board and computer games.
Fear in games <br casinosnogamstop.co.uk />
During his lifetime, Lovecraft treated the games of any kind with contempt, considering them a meaningless occupation. However, his literary work had a huge impact on games. In 1981, the American company Chaosium released the first edition of the board role -playing game Call of Cthulhu, based on Lovecraft’s Books.
This game, being very popular in itself, was also remarkable to introduce the mechanics of “Madness” – as in Lovecraft’s books, the mind of the characters of the game could darken when meeting with cosmic horrors. Mechanics of madness was so successful that it was copied in many other games. One of the most popular board games based on Lovecraft’s creativity was the game “Arkham Horror” (1987), also released by Chaosium.
But besides board games, the writer’s literature inspired computer games developers. Although there are very few games based on Lovecraft’s works themselves, several games can be distinguished, it is Shadow of the Comet, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Darkness with: in Pursuit of Loight Nolder, Darkness Whathin: THE Dark Lineage, Conarium, Call of Cthulhu 2018. To one degree or another, these games were able to convey the right atmosphere and a sense of complete hopelessness that Lovecraft conveyed so much in his works. But not all of these games were able to scare … what’s the problem? Most likely in the fact that they are created according to Lovecraft’s books, but do not start from them.
For example: a series of Dead Space with necromorphs and an obelisk; Bloodborne with the ancient gods; Alone in the Dark; Amnesia. Because all these games took the basis and created something new.
Dead Space
I will not retell the plot, you can see the story of the Dead Space series, I will tell you the process of creating. But in this series (especially in the first part) a sense of helplessness was conveyed. You are alone on a ship, there are no survivors, and instead of them terrible monsters, ready to kill you and turn you in yourself, and also an artifact under the side, striving to drive you crazy.
The creators of the series were able to scare us. Scare us with cosmos that is not friendly to us. Dead cosmos.
